Evaluation of the Spine Concept ”Kraftwerk” of the DaimlerChrysler AG

Objective

The Wörth Spine Concept “Kraftwerk” (power plant) was developed at the DaimlerChrysler plant in Wörth for the prevention of and reduction of existing back pain. The aim of this study was to investigate if device based training of the back extensors (in work setting) can reduce back pain, improve subjective quality of life and reduce absence from work. 

Methods

32 training sessions. Participants were evaluated at the beginning, after 16 training sessions and after 32 training sessions. 

Main outcomes: Isometric strength, SF-36, FFBH, reduction in sick days.

Outcome

The training group showed significant improvements in isometric muscle strength (especially in lumbar extensors) (P<0.000) and functional back capacity (FFBH) (p=0.037). Participants also indicated an improved subjective quality of life (SF-36). 

Cost-benefit analyses: Training group showed a 35% reduction in sick days, while in the control group there was only a reduction of 7% over same time period. Sick leave cases were reduced 48% which means that especially short period sick leave could be reduced.
